Radiation Oncology
The Division of Radiation Oncology stands as a leading academic and clinical centre for cancer care in Africa - defined by innovation, excellence, and an unwavering commitment to equitable access.
Anchored at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and supported by a dynamic multi-site platform, the Division delivers high-quality, evidence-based radiotherapy to one of the largest oncology patient populations in the country. In a resource-constrained environment, we have emerged as a model of what is possible when clinical excellence is combined with strategic innovation.
Each year, the Division manages approximately 4,500–5,000 new oncology patients and delivers radiotherapy to around 4,000 patients, placing it among the highest-volume centres in the public sector . Through the adoption of advanced technologies and forward-thinking treatment paradigms - including IMRT, VMAT, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), and image-guided brachytherapy, we deliver care that is aligned with international best practice.
What distinguishes the Division is not only the scale of its service, but the philosophy that underpins it. We have pioneered pragmatic, high-impact innovations such as widespread hypofractionation, AI-assisted and remote radiotherapy planning, and workflow optimisation that have dramatically improved patient access and reduced treatment backlogs, without compromising quality.
Clinical services are delivered through four highly specialised units:
