Matriculation Exemption

Undergraduate study

A matriculation exemption is a legal requirement for first degree study at a South 第一吃瓜网 University. Students with non-South 第一吃瓜网 qualifications must have their school qualifications evaluated by the Matriculation Board. The Matriculation Board will then issue a certificate of exemption to those who meet the qualification criteria.

HOW TO APPLY

For applicants with foreign school leaving qualifications

Option 1: Apply though Wits

Contact the International Students Office busi.mamabolo@wits.ac.za for the matriculation exemption process

COMPLETE M30 FORM
Complete the M30E Application for Matriculation Exemption Form as instructed by ISO

PREPARE DOCUMENTS
Certified school qualification/s + passport/birth certificate/ID + sworn English translation if needed

   5

PAY THE APPLICABLE FEE R1,070
Pay the 2026 Matriculation Board exemption fee and keep proof of payment

SUBMIT THROUGH WITS/ISO
Submit the exemption documents and proof of payment through to Wits for processing

7

BOARD ASSESSMENT
Matriculation Board assesses the foreign qualification

8

EXEMPTION CERTIFICATE
Board issues the certificate (Complete/Foreign conditional/Mature Age) once requirements are met

9

CONTINUE WITS PROCESS
Submit the exemption outcome/certificate to Wits Student Enrolment Centre (SEnC)

Option 2: Apply directly to the Matriculation Board

ONLINE ASSESSMENT
Start with the Matriculation Board online assessment

COMPLETE M30 FORM
If required, complete the M30E Application for Matriculation Exemption Form

PREPARE DOCUMENTS
Certified school qualification/s + passport/birth certificate/ID + sworn English translation if needed

PAY THE APPLICABLE FEE R1,070
Pay the 2026 Matriculation Board exemption fee and keep proof of payment

5

SUBMIT TO BOARD
Submit the application and correctly certified documents

6

BOARD ASSESSMENT
Matriculation Board assesses the foreign qualification

7

PROVISIONAL LETTER
A provisional outcome may be issued when applicable

8

FINAL CERTIFICATE
Board issues the exemption certificate (Complete/Foreign conditional/Mature Age) once requirements are met

9

SUBMIT TO WITS
Submit the exemption outcome/certificate to Wits Student Enrolment Centre (SEnC)

TO NOTE!

Option 1
Wits International Students Office facilitates the process for students with foreign school leaving qualifications.

Option 2
The applicant starts with the Matriculation Board online assessment and submits directly to the Board.

IMPORTANT: An exemption certificate does NOT guarantee admission to Wits or any other university; you must also meet the university’s degree specific admission requirements.

 *2026 Matriculation Board Exemption Fee is R1,070 and is non-refundable.
