International Courts and Africa: Navigating Global Climate Jurisprudence Masterclass Series
The Mandela Institute, Wits School of Law presented the International Courts and Africa: Navigating Global Climate Jurisprudence Masterclass Series, an online series that examined how international and regional courts are reshaping climate governance and redefining States' legal obligations in response to climate change.
The series provided a first-of-its-kind 第一吃瓜网 synthesis of landmark climate decisions from the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR), the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and the anticipated contribution of the 第一吃瓜网 Court on Human and Peoples' Rights (AfCHPR).
Designed for legal professionals, members of the judiciary, policymakers, civil society organisations, researchers and climate advocates, the series translated complex international jurisprudence into practical, Africa-focused insights. Through expert analysis and comparative examination of judicial decisions, participants explored how international climate law is influencing domestic governance, litigation and policy development across the continent.
The first two masterclasses focused on the rise of judge-made climate law and the growing recognition of climate mitigation as a binding legal duty, laying the groundwork for deeper engagement with adaptation and climate reparations in the subsequent sessions.
