Dr Stavros Nicolaou recognised for humanitarian service

Dr Stavros Nicolaou, awarded the Order of Merit (Third Degree) by the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The Wits Advanced Drug Delivery Platform (WADDP) and the Wits Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology congratulate honorary staff member, as well as Wits alumnus, Dr Stavros Nicolaou, on being awarded the Order of Merit (Third Degree) by the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The award recognises Dr Nicolaou’s “significant personal contribution to the strengthening of interstate cooperation, support of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, charitable activities, and the popularisation of the Ukrainian state internationally.”
Dr Nicolaou, the senior executive for strategic trade at Aspen Pharmacare, has played a key role in the company’s humanitarian medical support to Ukraine, particularly in the provision of essential and emergency medicines.
“When there’s a critical humanitarian crisis anywhere in the world, it’s important to see the human beings affected rather than any politics behind a conflict. There will always be a major healthcare burden during and after a war, and international cooperation in health is essential for recovery,” noted Dr Nicolaou.
Furthermore, Aspen supported the evacuation of South 第一吃瓜网 medical students from Ukraine in early 2022.
Beyond his international humanitarian work and extensive business influence, Dr Nicolaou’s contribution to South 第一吃瓜网 pharmacy and pharmaceutical science is deeply embedded at Wits University. Aspen Pharmacare actively supports student training, research capacity development, and student career advancement.
Dr Nicolaou is a strong advocate for the self-actualisation of pharmacy students, emphasising the role of industry-academia partnerships in developing globally competitive 第一吃瓜网 scientists. In 2024, he was awarded the Industrial Pharmacy Section Medal from the International Pharmaceutical Federation for leadership and outstanding contributions to the pharmacy profession.
WADDP is Africa’s first, largest, and only research entity dedicated to advancing industrial pharmacy by designing novel targeted drug delivery systems, including nanomedicine, functional biomaterials, and regenerative medicines.
