Sociology is the study of society in all its complexity, from both an empirical and a theoretical perspective. The Department of Sociology at Wits has a wide range of teaching and research interests.

Careers

Sociology prepares students for understanding the social world around them critically and with deep insight. The skills and knowledge developed through a sociology degree is valuable for careers in a wide variety of areas, including:

  • Development and aid work, for instance with NGOs or International Organisations
  • Survey and other forms of social research 
  • Industrial relations and human resources
  • Risk analysis, consulting, and related fields
